In episode one of Executive Face Time, Hal Espo, sits down with Wall Street Journal Publisher L. Gordon Crovitz, to explore how the premier business publishing brand continues to innovate and deliver content to their demanding and technologically savvy customers how and when they want it.


L. Gordon Crovitz is Publisher, The Wall Street Journal, executive vice president of Dow Jones & Company, and president of the Company’s Consumer Media Group. He is responsible for the Company’s media operations serving consumers, including The Wall Street Journal, Wall Street Journal Online, Barron’s and Barron’s Online, MarketWatch and the company’s other web properties as well as television, video and audio, and the Company’s SmartMoney and Vedomosti joint ventures. He is a member of the Dow Jones executive committee.

Prior to assuming his present position in February 2006, Mr. Crovitz served since October 1998 as senior vice president of Dow Jones and president of the Electronic Publishing group, where he was responsible for the Company’s Dow Jones Newswires, Financial Information Services, Dow Jones Indexes and Dow Jones Consumer Electronic Publishing businesses, which included The Wall Street Journal Online, Barron’s Online and MarketWatch. During this time, electronic publishing revenues doubled to more than $500 million, operating income tripled to more than $110 million and the operating margin grew to more than 22% from less than 5%. In 1999, Mr. Crovitz was a founder of Factiva, which is now No.1 in its market, from No.3 in 1999.

In the year before he assumed his present position in October 1998, Mr. Crovitz was vice president/planning and development, with responsibility for identifying new business strategies and opportunities for the Company and its major business units. Earlier, he spent six years in Hong Kong. In 1992, he was named editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review, a Dow Jones magazine, and in 1993 assumed additional responsibilities as the Review’s publisher and as managing director of Review Publishing Co. He was named managing director of Dow Jones Telerate’s Asia/Pacific region in October 1996. He also served as chairman of the Dow Jones Asia Regional Committee.

Mr. Crovitz began his career at Dow Jones in 1980 as a summer intern writing editorials for The Wall Street Journal. He was founding editorial page editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe in Brussels in 1982 and returned to New York in 1984 as an editorial page writer for the U.S. Journal. In 1986, he was appointed to the Journal’s editorial board, and became assistant editor, administration, for the editorial page. He also launched and wrote the weekly Journal column, “Rule of Law.” From 1990 to 1992, Mr. Crovitz also wrote editorials for Barron’s.

Mr. Crovitz won a Gerald Loeb Award for business commentary in 1990 and first-place awards for commentary in the New York State Bar Association’s competition from 1987 to 1991. He is co-editor of “The Fettered Presidency,” a book published by the American Enterprise Institute in 1989 and numerous articles, including for the Harvard Business Review. In 2004, Mr. Crovitz was named one of the top 10 business innovators by the New York Executive Council. He is on the boards of the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Association and of an investment advisory committee of Media Technology Ventures and on the Rhodes Scholar selection committee.

Mr. Crovitz is a graduate of the University of Chicago. He earned a law degree at Wadham College, Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar, and a doctor of laws degree from Yale University Law School. He and his wife, Minky Worden, have two sons.

Hal Espo has more than 25 years experience as an operating executive as well as a business and product development professional in the electronic information industry. Hal served as Chief Operating Officer of Index Stock Imagery, Inc., a web-based commercial stock photography and illustration vendor, and previously was the Chief Operating Officer at CORSEARCH, Inc., a trademark research firm serving Fortune 500 companies and law firms. Earlier, he served as a strategist at Insurance Services Office, Inc., a major information supplier to the property & casualty insurance industry, and for more than 10 years worked in strategy and planning, alliance development, direct and reseller channel sales, marketing and product development at LexisNexis and Knight-Ridder Information/Dialog Information Services, Inc. Hal holds a B.A. from Earlham College, an M.L.S. from Indiana University, and an M.B.A. from San Diego State University.
