Margaret Beckett is the first woman to be Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the British Cabinet, and only the second woman to hold one of the four Great Offices of State. In 1994, she led the Labour Party after the sudden death of John Smith and held that position until the election of Tony Blair later that year.
On Monday, April 16, 2007 Margaret Beckett, British Foreign Secretary, delivered the Winston Churchill Lecture in New York City.
During her remarks, Beckett stressed the sheer scale of the climate change challenge and its effect on international security, politics, economics and society. She then outlined the urgent response demanded of politicians and business leaders alike.
