The Software and Information Industry Association Executive FaceTime series continues, as show host Hal Espo, President of Contextual Connections, LLC, sits down with Bob Merry, President and Publisher of Congressional Quarterly, a leading DC based publication that focuses on Washington news, politics and policy to talk about where CQ fits into the larger media industry.

CQ’s mission has remained relatively constant over the years – to help people track legislation through Congress and to follow what Congress is doing. CQ is in a position to expand from covering Congress to all kinds of government (state, foreign, central banks, trade relationships among governments, etc). So the mission has changed to include more areas of government.

What has also changed is how they accomplish that mission and deliver information. The Web has been an instigator to branch out. CQ is now a beltway company. However, that can be a weakness because the beltway is a small market. The Web is the vehicle to expand beyond the beltway and reach more people.

Creating CQ.com was one of the most significant corporate decisions the company has ever made in its 62 year history. The online medium was the perfect medium for people to track legislation through Congress. Online made Congressional information instantaneous and searchable.
