The nice thing about working in an environmentally-conscious field is that the community is extremely tight, creative and driven. More often than not, we’re also fairly well-read, well-fed and aesthetically-aware, IMHO.

Case in point, a former roommate and friend of mine Starre Vartan (halluh!) runs her own blog, Eco-Chick, has a book coming out next spring (as well as another in the works), is the Green Guru @ Audubon Magazine, Mistress of Eco-Fashion @ The Daily Green, as well as a polyglot freelance writer and contributor for various blogs and publications. Oh right, she’s also a non-fiction MFA candidate at Columbia in her spare time (which manages, somehow, to exist.)

Both of us being busy bees, we don’t always get to catch up in person. Thank God/Allah/Vishnu/Gaia we’re both bloggers! In cruising her site this afternoon I came upon a recent post of hers highlighting the growing number of green residential properties in NYC. Luckily, she’s not only an eco-chick, but a techno-chick as well and was kind enough to turn us onto this video, courtesy of IntoTheBox.tv.

From Starre’s writeup:

Living in a city, especially one as walking and public-transport oriented as New York, is way more sustainable than the ‘burbs or the country, since resources for so many people are centralized. You can go even greener by renting or buying an apartment that’s in one of the green buildings that are cropping up in the NY-metro area. Check this fun video out on the greening of New York City’s real-estate market, and get a few peeks inside what those LEED-certified eco-apartments look like (fun)!

It’s a little light on the specifics, which I was curious about….what exactly are the energy savings over a traditional apartment, what materials are used in building and insulation, any wastewater innovations, and how much better is the air quality in one of these pads? Still, a fun eco-centric watch for those who are into real-estate porn (guilty!).

Be sure to look for more from Starre as she is wonderfully, magnificently prolific in her work. Oh, and BTW, if you dig her work, then Digg her work, as that’s how we roll in the verdant blogosphere. After all fellas (…and ladies), she’s only trying to help ;^)
