Dr. Össur Skarphéðinsson, Iceland’s Minister of Energy and Industry, believes his country serves as a transferable model for sustainable energy development.
Skarphéðinsson echoed his president, Ólafur Ragnar GrÃmsson, in saying that Iceland’s success as a country is tightly knit to energy.
Now Skarphéðinsson wants to spread that success by investing in other countries around the world.
Iceland’s collaboration with the government of Djibouti was given as an example of the sort of investment Skarphéðinsson had in mind.
Djibouti lies in East Africa in an area known for it’s geothermal resources. Skarphéðinsson believes that with Iceland’s help. Djibouti can develop over 14,000 Mw of geothermal power and perhaps even four times that amount with advancements in deep drilling technology.
Beyond Djibouti, Iceland is also working in developing energy in Indonesia, where deep drilling installations could bring about as much as 120,000 Mw of clean energy to the country.
