Vivienne Cox, Chief Executive of BP Alternative Energy, feels that now is the time to build a sustainable energy industry alongside traditional oil and gas businesses.
“The Fundamental challenge is that there is demand for more energy and that his energy be reliable, affordable and clean.”
Since bringing BP Alternative together two years ago, Cox has shared in the difficulties and opportunities of developing alternative energy.
“We need a whole range of different technologies and perspectives.”
As a way of fostering both, BP is working with MASDAR to develop an industrial-scale hydrogen-fired power generation project in Abu Dhabi.
This hydrogen power plant will generate 420 Mw of low-carbon power by transporting sequestered CO2 into oil fields. Aside from aiding in oil recovery, the sequestered carbon will eliminate an estimated 1.7 million tons of emissions, equal to the amount currently produced by all the cars of Abu Dhabi.
According to Cox, the plant is scheduled to go into commercial operation by 2012.
