In beginning his address to the World Future Energy Summit, His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, Duke of York asserted the significance of Abu Dhabi’s tradition as a global leader in energy production.

“I’m very excited by the concepts and vision shown by the government of Abu Dhabi and in particular the team at MASDAR. I’m certain that the establishment of MASDAR’s long term aims and objectives will have a large influence on the future of our planet and our ability to stabilize the levels of emissions that are so damaging.”

Prince Andrew asked that Abu Dhabi be recognized for their advancement of alternative and renewable energy sources.

Sh. Mohammad and his government are to be applauded for choosing to direct significant resources towards the development and implementation of these alternative sources of energy to provide sustainable energy for the 22nd century and beyond.”

Prince Andrew noted that discussions about future energy use do not have to assume a future without oil. Instead, Prince Andrew argued, we should focus more on making smarter, more efficient use of our existing natural resources and advancing emissions sequestration technology.

If we do nothing, the Duke continued…

“…global CO2 emissions will rise by 60% in 2030. This is of great concern to all of us, because it will affect all of us. No country, no company and no individual is exempt.”

Summing up his address, the Duke noted that:

“We have evolved into an animal that can shape our surroundings and bend our environment to our will. We have the intelligence and the science to first stabilize the effects we are having on our environment and from there, we can begin to work in harmony with our planet and reverse these effects.”
