Man Versus Bubbles…or How I Spent My Saturday

Friday night I cooked Ayesha a late dinner to satisfied her carnivorous meat cravings - flank stake marinated in garlic, ginger, soy, brown sugar, sesame oil and whatever else I could find in her fridge. I also made a mango frisée salad to satisfy my more feminine eating habits.

Of course, she had about 3 bites of steak before she was full so I ended up eating over a pound of steak, all the salad and drinking most of the bottle of wine.

Next thing I knew I was waking up on the couch at about 2am. I made my way to bed and quickly passed out again.

Fast forward to the morning.

Ayesha has a 1 bedroom apartment in a new building. The apartment has a dishwasher in it. But since she barely ever has more than one or two dishes to clean, she has never used it since she moved in over a year ago.

I decided to change that. As I scanned the mess I had left all over the dinner table, the stove, the cutting board, the sink, I realized this was the perfect opportunity to finally put the dishwasher to use.

So I opened it up, pulled out the user manual, which was still in its sealed plastic packaging, pulled out the styrofoam that kept parts from clanking together during the install and loaded it up with dirty pots, pans, dishes, glasses, knives, forks and anything else i could fit in there.

It was only then that I realized that she had no dishwashing detergent. Not to be thwarted, I reached for the liquid detergent we use when we wash dishes by hand.

Not a good idea.

The next two hours were an epic battle of man versus bubble. I learned the hard way that the dishwasher is not air sealed. Nor does the drain work. Armed with a little plastic bowl and two sponges, I held my ground on the floor as scalding hot foam spewed through the sides of the dishwasher.

Ayesha, awake from the commotion, stood giggling behind me.
