Can Twitter be the new lifeline for people who find themselves in precarious situations in far-away places? News today that the social-networking blog site played a major role in freeing an American graduate student detained in an Egyptian jail after taking pictures of anti-government demonstrations. After he was arrested James Karl Buck sent a message to his friends via Twitter and his school hired an attorney and was able to get him released within a day. His translator, Mohammed Maree, wasn’t so lucky. After his release Buck returned to the States and spent the last three months, using his Twitter network, to help get Maree released. On Tuesday Buck made this post on Twitter: “Mohammed is free!”
