Report: Advertisers spending more money on themselves (read: their own Web Sites)
Companies are spending nearly 62% of their online ad/marketing budgets on their own sites, siphoning dollars away from other media options, according to the third annual advertising and spending report by Outsell. The shift accounts for $65.1 billion in spending. As a result, publishers are starting to offer their own ad/marketing services to recapture lost revenue, Outsell said. The report, which took the pulse of 1,088 U.S. advertisers on their spending plans for the year, said that total U.S. advertising and marketing will grow 3.9% this year, to $412.4 billion (with the ad portion reaching $249.1 billion). Reflecting a sluggish economy, the growth rate for ad and marketing spending has dropped 5.8% compared with 2007. Online spending will grow 12% this year, to $105.3 billion. However, excluding advertisers’ spending on their own sites, that figure drops to $40.2 billion.
