Silly us. We thought we had the goods on the acronym ‘SMAC’ for our recently launched cultural channel. Alas, SMAC has now been trademarked as the Social Media Advertising Council. Representatives from more than 25 agencies, brand advertisers and social-media companies have joined the fray. The goal of SMAC is to create a common vocabulary, standard buying units and uniform measurement methods for marketing within social media. Social network ad revenues are projected to hit an estimated $1.8 billion in 2009 (out of total online ad market of $30 billion), according to eMarketer.
