John Stapsy, Managing Director of Datavideo USA, stopped by for a quick demo of the HS-1000, a mobile HD / SD “studio in a box”. John’s apartment is a block away, so he’s conveniently close.

We just brought the HS-1000 to a 250 person social media conference we produced on Monday @ the Tribeca Rooftop for a live action workout. It did not disappoint. We had two Sony EX1 HD cameras and PowerPoints coming from a laptop into the Datavideo board. We did a live mix out to 6 plasma screens located around the venue. We also recorded the live mix straight to a Datavideo DN-300 hard disk recorder.

The HS-1000 rolls on wheels. My back thanked me many times for that. I wish all the plasmas rolled on wheels too. My back was not thankful for the gratuitous use of six plasma screens and the 100 pound stands that went with them.

Jason whispers sweet nothings to the HS-1000. What does Heather think of Jason’s wandering ways?!

The HS-1000 includes Datavideo’s SE-1000 switcher with individual input source monitors and the TLM-170 17 inch monitor that pulls out and flips up for viewing. Here’s what’s included in the package:

  • SE-1000 Mixer
  • Two TLM-433 monitor units (which gives you a combined six 3″ displays)
  • One TLM-170 pull-out 17″ monitor (which you can watch your live mix on)
  • ITC-100KF1000 intercom kit with 6 belt packs, headsets, and tally lights (so the team can talk to each other)
  • TB-10 tally box (so you know which camera is the live shot)
  • DN-300 DV/HDV Hard Disk Drive Recorder (so you can record the live mix straight to hard disk recorder)
  • RP-20 lockable pull-out shelf for the SE-1000 mixer
  • RP-21 SDI, DVI, and Component rear break-out panel
  • RP-22 ITC-100 rear break-out panel
  • RP-23 rackmount for DN-300 and DV deck (not included)
  • PD-1 power distributor
  • CCS-M1 aluminum case

The Datavideo HS-1000 is an SD/HD Mobile Video Studio designed around the recently introduced SE-1000 six-channel SD/HD vision switcher. The HS-1000 system offers six inputs (five HD/SD SDI and one DVI/RGB) and three outputs (three HD/SD SDI), RS-422 control, Ethernet connectivity and a built-in 10-bit, six-channel frame synchronizer that synchronizes all inputs without the need for Gen Lock (external Gen Lock synchronization also available).

The SE-1000 also features six built-in HD-SDI to HD-YUV, SD-YUV and Composite format converters, enabling loop through of each input for real-time monitoring during production. The whole system is fully integrated with the ITC-100KF1000 for talkback/intercom, 2 x TLM-433 monitor banks, and the TLM-170 main output monitor.

Afternoon Panel Discussion

What I like about this unit is that it handles both SD & HD, which, as many companies are migrating from the SD world to the HD world, with one foot still firmly planted in each world, it’s nice to have a solution that can bridge the gap while you make the transition. Want to shoot all HD? No problem. SD only? No problem.
