Aja Hi5 HD-SDI to HDMI Converter

Aja sent the Hi5, an HD-SDI to HDMI converter, for us to review. It’s cute and cuddly and gets the job done.

The name makes me think of Johny-Five, the robot from Short Circuit, an influential movie of my youth that, in part, made me the man I am today.

The Hi5 lives in a high definition world, where cameras such as the Sony EX1 pump 1080p high definition video out of an HD-SDI connector. If we want to send that footage directly to a large HD enabled LCD monitor, however, the monitor has no HD-SDI inputs, only HDMI.

Hence the need for a converter to see my beautiful high def footage on the HD LCD.

The cool thing is that HD-SDI can handle video and, I believe, 5 channel audio. The Aja Hi5 can take the audio and video input and send them both out a single HDMI output right to the TV. One cable in. One cable out. Clean and tidy.

The Hi5 also has an HD-SDI output so I can send the raw signal somewhere else, such as to a video mixing board. I can also send the audio out of RCA outputs into, for example, a sound board for separate audio monitoring.

And it’s cute and cuddly, barely weighing more than an iPhone. Number 5 is alive!
