We had a chance to film Christine at the Healthcare Facilities Summit in Boca Raton, Florida.

Thanks to HFS for letting us attend and to everyone who sat down with us.

Kaiser Permanente is the largest real estate holder in California, managing a real estate portfolio of over 1,000 buildings.

Christine Malcolm, SVP, Hospital Strategy & National Facilities, Kaiser Permanente and Kathy Gerwig, Vice President, Workplace Safety, Environmental Stewardship Officer, Kaiser Permanente talk about how sustainability permeates their management of existing and construction of new facilities.

Christine leads national facilities strategy, a services group and hospital strategy group within Kaiser Permanente, with 2,900 employees. She is responsible for the team that designs, builds and maintains medical facilities, from construction all the way down to landscaping.

Environmental stewardship is a major goal for Christine and Kathy because more than half of Kaiser’s carbon footprint comes from the buildings. Reducing the carbon footprint has become a priority.

The overall strategy of the group is to deliver the smartest facilities in healthcare. Smart means paying attention to patient and employee safety attributes of the facilities.

By linking sustainability with workplace and patient safety, Christine’s team often finds it easier to push through sustainability initiatives and make the business case for them.
