NASA reported this morning that its Orbiting Carbon Observatory satellite failed to reach orbit and likely plunged into the ocean near Antarctica.
The $278 million satellite was meant to track carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and provide scientists with a better understanding of global warming.
The launch failure is the second for Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corporation’s Taurus XL rocket out of eight attempts.
