The Google Blog announced today that the company is set to install super high-speed Internet access to a number of US communities.
We’re planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
The product managers on the project write that their overall goal is to “experiment and learn,” and generally see what applications are possible for developers to create when bandwidth is great enough that a feature length movie could be downloaded in a few minutes.
Google’s currently accepting community recommendations and nominations.
First thought: Somehow we don’t think our neck of New York City is in the running.
Second thought: Does it shame Internet Service Providers that a Google can step in and blow away their service offerings. Granted the scale is different but in a world of we can’t, Google is saying, will do.
