Initial Test Results Indicate at Least 33,000 gallons of Algae Oil per Acre Possible
Not too long ago, I spoke with Valcent Products Inc. CEO and Principal scientist Glen Kertz about his company’s Vertigro bioreactor system.
Judging from the first wave of Vertigro test data, the promise of sustainably producing large amounts of biofuels-ready algae oil is becoming more and more of a reality — and a potentially revolutionary reality at that!

Kicking Corn out of the Biofuels Clubhouse
Article: I read through Lauren Etter’s 2,000+ word Wall Street Journal article with an equal amount of enthusiasm and dismay. It uses the terms “biofuels”, “renewable fuel” and “corn ethanol” synonymously, which though logical, is deeply troubling.

Video: I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Glen Kertz, CEO and Principal Scientist for Valcent, to talk about his Vertigro bioreactor system and the promise of algae as a sustainable biofuels feedstock. Fellow phycophilics rejoice — your algae-porn is here!

Video: I’m not sure that I can do a better job summarizing this article about Johnathan Goodwin and his Biodiesel H2 than Daily Kos. Maybe it’s because I’m pressed for time or because I enjoyed the writeup in its original format. Whichever way, I will shamelessly nod my hat to Markos Moulitsas Zúniga and all the fine work he’s done and continues to do, day in and day out.

Shawn Frayne’s Windbelt Wins Popular Mechanics 2007 Breakthrough Award
According to the 28-year-old Shawn Frayne, prototypes of the Windbelt have generated 40 milliwatts in 10-mph slivers of wind, making his device 10 to 30 times as efficient as the best microturbines.
For his innovation, Shawn recently received a Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award and I had the pleasure of hearing him speak during a conference held on the top floor of Hearst Tower.

The Results are in — Algae has a Posse
Video: The test results are in this week and algae appears to be a serious contender in the biofuels feedstock decathlon. Vertigro vs. 3DMS vs. plastic bags n’ tubes. Call it what you will, it’s all about surface-area-to-volume ratios. Then again, pretty pictures and vivacious videos can make all the difference in jump-starting your start-up.
