VIDEO: Before the iPhone, mobile cells wowed with ringtones and games. Now we’re in a future with a phone, Internet, and iPod all in one. What’s in it for the content provider?

Video: So why are the cell phone carrier networks so closed? Why do they charge (and how do they get away with) a few dollars to download a crappy ringtone? The carriers believe that since they spent the money to build out their networks that it is their right to decide what content flows across their pipes and airwaves, and what they should (and can) charge for access to that content. If the FCC didn’t charge anything for the spectrum, the carriers would be a lot more open and take more risk. So what advice do the panelists have for the carriers?

Secondly, there are innovations in the user interface on the hand set, which will spur adoption and growth in the market.

VIDEO: Widgets, small componentized applications that can sit on a blog or social network page are the next big platform for content deployment. While many of the early widgets were simplistic displays of horoscopes or weather, new platforms such as Facebook support full-fledged applications, driving advertising or e-commerce.
