Stan Winston passed away at age 62. The man that brought us all the special effects of the Terminator, Aliens, Men In Black, Jurassic Park, Edward Scissorhands, Predator, Batman (er…the Tim Burton version) and countless others has gone… unless his body is just from an alginate mold.

There was a time wee little Garry wanted to do movie makeup and effects. As a creepy young kid my heroes were Lon Chaney (Sr and Jr), Rick Baker, Tom Savini — and of course Stan. I’d terrorize the few neighborhood kids I knew (sad Garry spent weekends in the library) — with fake scars, flesh wounds, glue on skin and eyeballs hanging out of their sockets. All thanks to a some book swiped from the library about makeup from home materials. Can’t remember what it was called.

Rest in piece Stan. Your children still live on in the movies.

Saw this over at TUAW. Some guy named Dennis Liu made this music video for a band called The Bird and the Bee using his mac desktop. Pretty cool; and shows how a little ingenuity can go a long way.

It’s appropriate that riding this thing would be the equivalent of kicking me in my naughty bits; as the inventor, Ben Gulak is only 18 years old, and that’s enough of a kick to the groin. Canadian too. Ouch.

It looks like one wheel, but it’s actually 2 wheels side to side and using gyroscope technology to stand upright. Strangely, so do I. Moving in the direction the driver leans - the more you lean the faster you go - the Uno is also a green transport - with a 2.5 hour battery life.

Basically it’s male vibrator - a manbrator? — that actually takes you somewhere.
