The call for a dynamic change to the way small and mid-sized businesses access the Internet and exchange files is finally being addressed. Using cost-effective WiMAX technology, Rainbow Broadband Inc (RBI) has developed a fast and reliable broadband network that can deliver symmetrical bandwidth at speeds up to 100MB/S to businesses which were previously limited in access due to location or cost.

At June’s BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY, Russ Hamm, RBI’s President and Founder, focused on how RBI’s offering of Alternate Broadband Access/True Diversity has saved various NYC-based SMBs vast amounts of money by eliminating the reliance on the incumbent carriers’ infrastructure.

RBI’s client, MasterDisk CEO and Founder, Doug Levine discussed how improvements in Internet connection quality provided by RBI’s service positively impacted his business and led to high returns on investment.

M5 Networks is considered a pioneer of the Voice as a Service model, a breakthrough solution for business phone communications. Industry experts tell us that in ten years, no business will have a phone system – they will acquire phone system capabilities as an on-demand, managed service over the Internet. Leading this charge is M5 Networks.

The software applications M5 offers customers allows them to have all the features of a traditional business phone system, plus a wide range of other features tailored to their needs.

At the June Telehouse Breakfast on Broadway breakfast seminar, using several case studies, Brian Klansky, M5 Networks’ VP of Sales/Marketing, delineated the top ten business breakthroughs in VoIP that are driving businesses towards the on-demand, managed phone service model.

Most on-premise software sold in Europe has been sold through traditional IT channels - from Systems Integrators and Corporate Resellers at the enterprise level through to VARs and Retailers/E-tailers at the SOHO/Consumer level. Will such traditional channels manage to adapt their business models in the face of the changing economics of delivering SaaS or will new channels emerge to seize the SaaS opportunity?

Use of the term “business ecology” or “ecosystem” has often been used in the realm of information technology. The classic business definition of ecosystem is that of an economic community supported by participating organisations and individuals.

Previous conceptualisations of the term have been criticised for not actualising their promise, specifically in the world of partnership and affinity. As technologies evolve we are presented with new opportunities to expand the role of ecosystems in business. Panelists discuss the role ecosystems and platforms will play in creating, cementing, and expanding partnerships.

William Gibson, who coined the term cyberspace, said “the future is already here, it’s just unevenly distributed.”

Paul R. Daugherty, Chief Technology Architect, Accenture talks about a ubiquitous network.

We can see data points around the future, but its easy to miss the big picture. The big picture in SaaS is cloud computing. It is a pressure on the industry. 30 years ago, companies were building mainframes. There wasn’t the internet to spread processing. Client / server moved capacity from the date center to the desktop. Capacity was spread. Cloud computing is pulling things back to the center.

Virtualization is now happening with servers and hardware. The next step is dynamically provisioning.
