Viagra is safe for frequent use. But it does cause some side effects. Some of the common side effects are facial flushing, nasal congestion, headache, and heartburn (1). None of these side effects are severe, and they rarely become a reason for discontinuation of treatment with Viagra.

Most side effects of Viagra are self-limiting. It means that they do not last long and would generally go even without taking any steps. These side effects rarely last more than a few hours. However, reduce the discomfort caused by them by using some non-pharmacological methods. These side effects are not a reason to discontinue using Viagra.

Understanding Heartburn

The Word heartburn may sound frightening, but it is a benign condition. It merely means the sensation of burning in the epigastric region (the upper part of the stomach, which is very close to the heart). Some people may confuse it with discomfort in the heart, though it is unrelated to it. The name heartburn is thus a bit misleading (2).

This condition occurs due to the backward movement of gastric food content that is mixed with gastric acid. This backward movement irritates the lower region of the food pipe (esophagus), causing a burning sensation. In medical terms, this condition is called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) (3).

A muscular band-like structure called a sphincter can prevent this backward movement of gastric content. This sphincter is at the lower end of the esophagus. It seems that Viagra has a relaxing effect on this sphincter, which results in heartburn (4).

Natural Ways to Manage Heartburn

Most people would not need to take medications and manage this condition with the help of non-pharmacological means. Some may need over-the-counter medications as they are more prone to gastric conditions or already have some gastric disease.
