The New York City Police Department, and two Audio Technica’s

audio_technica_stereo-microphoneAs the producer of Inside the NYPD, I do a lot of guerrilla field work. Often I’m running from point A to point B with the officers of the NYPD, not always sure that I’m in focus and definitely not always sure about sound quality.

That’s why I was especially happy with when we received the Audio Technica BP4027 and the much shorter Audio Technica BP4029 for us to review.

These are really great microphones if you are doing any sort of field work. They have two XLR outputs per device, one output dedicated to the tip of the microphone (for super directional sound) and the other dedicated to the sides of the microphone (to pick up more of the surrounding ambient sound).

These microphones both feature:

  • Independent Line-cardioid and Figure-of-eight condenser elements
  • Switchable low-frequency roll-off
  • Switch selection of non-matrixed M-S mode and two internally-matrixed left/right stereo modes
  • Includes a 0.61 m (24″) cable (5-pin XLRF to two standard 3-pin XLRM connectors)

Here is an example of the sound quality I received at a quiet training ground:

And here is an example shot on a busy, noisy New York street corner:

Really I can not say enough nice things about these microphones. I have been very happy with the quality and will take them with me to shoot many, many more episodes of Inside the NYPD.

For those interested, here is the complete episode the Audio Technica went on. At least 50% of the sound in this episode was captured using the BP4029.
